Volunteers from Wales’ leading first aid charity, St John Ambulance Cymru, are supporting a Welsh Government initiative delivering vital medications to people shielding and self-isolating due to Covid-19.
The scheme, which is running across Wales, already has 268 volunteers from third sector organisations including the British Red Cross and furloughed individuals giving their time from the optometry and pharmaceutical industries and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.
Over 676 community pharmacies and 18 dispensing doctors are involved in the scheme and 66 of these, predominantly along the M4 corridor and North East Wales, have been allocated to St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers.
Joining the scheme in Volunteers’ Week, it is hoped the first aid volunteers can reinforce the service as volunteers from other sectors start returning to work.
“Volunteers’ week provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase the dedication and strength of our volunteers none more so than through the Covid-19 pandemic.
We’re delighted to be supporting the Welsh Government and other organisations and help continue to deliver this vital service in these challenging times.
Our volunteers provide the backbone to the many services we provide in Wales and without them, we’d be unable to provide them. We want to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers who continue to deliver exceptional support in communities across Wales.”St John Ambulance Cymru Director of Operations, James Shaughnessy
“I would like to thank all volunteers who have played a pivotal role during the coronavirus pandemic. Its fantastic news that St John Ambulance Cymru has joined our prescription delivery service , their skills and expertise will further strengthen the service.”
Minister for Health, Vaughan Gething
