Pembrokeshire man’s new first aid skills called into action days after completing St John Ambulance Cymru training course

“It was nice to be able to feel like I was able to help rather than just stand by and be a spectator.”

A man is highlighting the importance of learning first aid skills just in case they are needed nearby, having been able to help when an accident happened near his office just days after he had completed a St John Ambulance Cymru training course.

31-year-old Kieran Warlow was at work in Milford Haven when he heard a deep thud outside his office. He quickly realised two vehicles had been involved in an accident on the road outside the Sunbelt Rental Depot where he works.

As it happens, he had completed a three-day First Aid at Work course at St John Ambulance Cymru’s Swansea Training Centre the previous week and put his newly acquired skills to work once he arrived at the scene of the collision.

Having ensured there were first aid-trained people supporting one driver that had been involved, Kieran turned his attention to the other driver and following the training he had been given, swiftly conducted a primary survey.

Kieran said:

“I was able to identify that he had started to go into shock from the impact and was getting confused and dazed, so I got him to sit down and took down some notes, like I’d been trained to do.”

As the man was shivering, Kieran helped find a blanket and recorded information on what had happened and details about the driver, including the amount of paracetamol and caffeine in the tablets he had been given. He then passed the notes to the emergency services once they arrived.

He added:

“The paramedic asked me where I’d learned to take handover notes like this, and I told him it was from the First Aid at Work course that I’d completed just the week before.”

Kieran was full of praise for the St John Ambulance Cymru Workplace Trainer who had delivered the course:

“Jon was phenomenal. He was so thorough and engaging in his delivery. I really enjoyed the experience of the course and learnt a lot. It was nice to do the course with a group of people who were all engaged, and it was really well delivered.

“I was going to leave a positive review anyway but I wanted to let people know what had happened in case it could potentially encourage others to take the course so they could potentially help in the future.

“It was really nice to feel like I may have actually made a positive impact.”

“Roedd yn braf gallu teimlo fy mod i’n gallu helpu yn hytrach na dim ond sefyll o’r neilltu a bod yn wyliwr.” - Dyn o Sir Benfro wedi defnyddio sgiliau cymorth cyntaf newydd dyddiau yn unig ar ôl iddo gwblhau cwrs hyfforddi St John Ambulance Cymru

Mae dyn yn amlygu pwysigrwydd dysgu sgiliau cymorth cyntaf rhag ofn bod eu hangen gerllaw, ar ôl iddo helpu pan ddigwyddodd damwain ger ei swyddfa, ychydig ddyddiau ar ôl iddo gwblhau cwrs hyfforddi St John Ambulance Cymru.

Roedd Kieran Warlow, 31 oed, wrth ei waith yn Aberdaugleddau pan glywodd daran ddofn y tu allan i'w swyddfa. Sylweddolodd yn gyflym fod dau gerbyd wedi bod mewn damwain ar y ffordd y tu allan i Ddepo Sunbelt Rentals lle mae'n gweithio.

Fel mae’n digwydd, roedd wedi cwblhau cwrs tridiau Cymorth Cyntaf yn y Gweithle yng Nghanolfan Hyfforddi St John Ambulance Cymru yn Abertawe'r wythnos gynt, ac fe wnaeth rhoi ei sgiliau newydd ar waith unwaith iddo gyrraedd lleoliad y damwain.

Ar ôl sicrhau bod pobl oedd wedi'u hyfforddi mewn cymorth cyntaf yn cefnogi un o’r gyrwyr, trodd Kieran ei sylw at y gyrrwr arall, ac yn dilyn yr hyfforddiant a gafodd, cynhaliodd arolwg cychwynnol arno yn gyflym.

Dywedodd Kieran:

“Fe wnes i sylwi ei fod wedi dechrau mynd i sioc o ganlyniad i'r gwrthdrawiad ac roedd yn mynd yn ddryslyd, felly gofynnais iddo eistedd i lawr a chymerais rai nodiadau i lawr, fel o'n i wedi cael fy hyfforddi i wneud.

Gan fod y dyn yn crynu, fe wnaeth Kieran helpu i ddod o hyd i flanced a chofnodi gwybodaeth am yr hyn oedd wedi digwydd a manylion am y gyrrwr, gan gynnwys faint o barasetamol a chaffein oedd yn y tabledi a gafodd. Yna trosglwyddodd y nodiadau i'r gwasanaethau brys ar ôl iddynt gyrraedd.

Ychwanegodd:

“Gofynnodd y parafeddyg i mi ble roeddwn i wedi dysgu cymryd nodiadau trosglwyddo fel hyn, a dywedais wrtho yr oeddwn i wedi’i gwblhau cwrs Cymorth Cyntaf yn y Gweithle'r wythnos gynt.”

Roedd Kieran yn llawn canmoliaeth i'r Hyfforddwr St John Ambulance Cymru a oedd wedi cyflwyno’r cwrs:

“Roedd Jon yn anhygoel. Roedd ei gyflwyniad mor drwyadl ac atyniadol. Mwynheais y profiad o gwblhau’r cwrs yn fawr a dysgais lawer. Roedd yn braf fod gyda grŵp o bobl a oedd i gyd wedi ymgysylltu â'r cwrs, ac fe'i cyflwynwyd yn dda iawn.

“Roeddwn i’n mynd i adael adolygiad cadarnhaol beth bynnag ond roeddwn i eisiau rhoi gwybod i bobl beth oedd wedi digwydd rhag ofn y gallai o bosibl annog eraill i gwblhau'r cwrs fel y gallent helpu yn y dyfodol.

“Roedd yn braf iawn teimlo efallai fy mod i wedi cael effaith gadarnhaol.”
