The South Wales Police Cadets are working together with St John Ambulance Cymru to create new young lifesavers in the community. The Police Cadets have booked in a series of free first aid courses with St John Ambulance Cymru, to give their young people the vital first aid skills they may need to save a life.
In light of St John Ambulance Cymru’s Defibruary campaign, the Police Cadets took part in a Defib-Awareness course to give them the much needed confidence to use a defibrillator in an emergency.
The Defib-Awareness Session, held by Community Trainer Dionne, gave a summary of the recovery position and CPR before covering a step-by-step guide to defibrillator use. The young people had a go at CPR on the first aid dummies and then practiced with training defibrillators. Dionne highlighted the importance of sending someone else at the scene to find a defibrillator, ensuring someone stays with the casualty, continuing CPR until the paramedics arrive. She also introduced the cadets to The Circuit, showing them how to find their nearest defibrillator in an emergency. By the end of the session, the Police Cadets were confident in how to use and locate their nearest defibrillator.
“It's great to be able to teach the Police Cadets at Llanederyn Police Station, as these are potential police officers of the future!” Dionne commented.
“Defibrillators are crucial within the first minutes of the chain of survival when finding a casualty. An early, prompt reaction time can help save a life.”
“Every minute is crucial” she said.
Statistics show that at the moment, only 30% – 40% of people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital will receive CPR from someone in the community. St John Ambulance Cymru are trying to change that. Teaching people first aid skills, like CPR and defibrillator use, means members of the community will be more confident to act quickly in an emergency situation.
Stephen Westlake from South Wales Police runs the Police Cadets, and feels passionately about these young people being confident in defibrillator use;
“We are very thankful to St John Ambulance Cymru for completing the defibrillator training with our Police Cadets” he said, “It was a really important input for them to experience because we know that this training could save lives.”
“We also know that these situations are often unexpected and that training will help to ensure our young people are prepared for stressful scenarios. It’s a skill that I feel the Cadets will never forget, the young people who learn how to use the defib will carry this information forward throughout their life.”
Darren Murray, Head of Community Operations at St John Ambulance Cymru commented, “Defibruary is such an important campaign. We want to be there for the people of Wales, by teaching more individuals how to save lives through first aid.”

Mae Cadetiaid Heddlu De Cymru yn cydweithio ag St John Ambulance Cymru i greu achubwyr bywyd ifanc newydd yn y gymuned. Mae Cadetiaid yr Heddlu wedi archebu cyfres o gyrsiau cymorth cyntaf rhad ac am ddim gydag St John Ambulance Cymru, i roi’r sgiliau cymorth cyntaf hanfodol i’w pobl ifanc y gall fod eu hangen arnynt i achub bywyd.
Yng ngoleuni ymgyrch Defibruary St John Ambulance Cymru, cymerodd Cadetiaid yr Heddlu ran mewn cwrs Ymwybyddiaeth Defib er mwyn rhoi’r hyder mawr ei angen arnynt i ddefnyddio diffibriliwr mewn argyfwng.
Rhoddodd y Sesiwn Ymwybyddiaeth Defib, a gynhaliwyd gan yr Hyfforddwr Cymunedol Dionne, grynodeb o'r sefyllfa adfer a CPR cyn neidio i mewn i gam wrth gam o ddefnyddio diffibriliwr. Rhoddodd y bobl ifanc gynnig ar CPR ar y dymis cymorth cyntaf ac yna ymarfer gyda hyfforddi diffibrilwyr. Tynnodd Dionne sylw at bwysigrwydd anfon rhywun arall yn y fan a’r lle i ddod o hyd i ddiffibriliwr, gan sicrhau bod rhywun yn aros gyda’r claf, gan barhau â CPR nes bod y parafeddygon yn cyrraedd. Cyflwynodd y cadetiaid i The Circuit hefyd, gan ddangos iddynt sut i ddod o hyd i'w diffibriliwr agosaf mewn argyfwng. Erbyn diwedd y sesiwn, roedd Cadetiaid yr Heddlu yn hyderus ynghylch sut i ddefnyddio a lleoli eu diffibriliwr agosaf.
Meddai Dionne, "Mae’n wych i ddysgu’r Cadetiaid Heddlu yng Ngorsaf Heddlu Llanederyn gan fod y rhain yn swyddogion heddlu posib y dyfodol!”
“Mae diffibrilwyr yn hollbwysig o fewn y munudau cyntaf y Gadwyn Goroesi wrth ddod o hyd i anafedig. Gall amser ymateb cynnar, prydlon helpu achub bywyd.”

Dengys ystadegau mai dim ond 30% - 40% o bobl sy'n dioddef ataliad y galon y tu allan i'r ysbyty ar hyn o bryd fydd yn cael CPR gan rywun yn y gymuned. Mae St John Ambulance Cymru yn ceisio newid hynny. Mae dysgu sgiliau cymorth cyntaf i bobl, fel CPR a defnyddio diffibriliwr, yn golygu y bydd aelodau'r gymuned yn fwy hyderus i weithredu'n gyflym mewn sefyllfa o argyfwng.

Mae’n sgil rwy’n teimlo na fydd y Cadetiaid byth yn ei anghofio, bydd y bobl ifanc sy’n dysgu sut i ddefnyddio’r defib yn cario’r wybodaeth hon ymlaen trwy gydol eu hoes.”
Dywedodd Darren Murray, Pennaeth Gweithrediadau Cymunedol yn Ambiwlans Sant Ioan Cymru, “Mae Defibruary yn ymgyrch mor bwysig. Rydyn ni eisiau bod yno i bobl Cymru, trwy ddysgu mwy o unigolion sut i achub bywydau trwy gymorth cyntaf.”
