Nearly every year 7 pupil across Anglesey is now equipped with vital lifesaving first aid skills following a successful, island-wide partnership.
During two weeks in October, every secondary school was visited by a number of agencies as part of the Crucial Crew initiative, which delivers essential and life-saving safety and PSHE messages to Year 6 and 7 children throughout Wales.
The multi-agency training days held by Crucial Crew sees organisations and charities, including Wales’ leading first aid charity, St John Cymru, come together to deliver important and informative sessions on a variety of topics.
The session ran by the chariy focussed on first aid, specifically cardiac arrest survival and explored key skills including how to administer cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
After the two weeks over 600 pupils across the island received the training and are now better equipped to help step in and help in a life-threating situation.
“Out of hospital cardiac arrest survivals rates in the Wales are currently less than 10%.
We know that good quality CPR and the prompt use of a defibrillator can increase survival rates and so the more people who are empowered with the skills to save a life, the better the chance of them getting help when they need it most.
I am delighted to be a part of Crucial Crew and have loved playing a part in helping to equip year 7 pupils with lifesaving skills across the island.”

Other organisations who attended the event included: British Transport Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue, Food Standards Agency,Crimestoppers, RNLI and Youth Services.
