About our 2 Day Paediatric First Aid Course

Anyone looking after children should have the knowledge of how to act should a child need lifesaving support. This 12 hour course will provide the skill and confidence to act in emergency scenarios that could face those looking after children, infants, and babies. You will be able to provide basic life support until healthcare professionals arrive on scene.

Our paediatric first aid training is recommended for childcare professionals by the National Childminding Association. It covers all the required first aid elements to register under the Childcare Approval Scheme. It can also be used for people working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education.

Please note that this is not suitable for children. Delegates must be over 16.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for anyone who works with infants and young children. This includes those who work in a nursery or pre-school. Childminders, after-school club leaders, caregivers, and nannies should also take this course.

How is it assessed?

Learners are continually assessed on the course by our highly experienced St John Ambulance Cymru trainers in line with current HSE guidelines through practical training. There is also an assessment paper.

Certification

Delegates will receive a St John Ambulance Cymru certificate valid for 3 years on successful completion.

When it comes to selecting a paediatric first aid course, St John Ambulance Cymru is the leading provider in Wales. In the UK, St John Ambulance is one of the voluntary aid societies (VAS) who are recognised by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) as standard setters for first aid training in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981. We don't require external accreditation through an Awarding Organisation. This is recognised in the in the National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12 years as a suitable provider for early years first aid training.

If you are working with children or babies professionally, then there are specific legal requirements you need to meet. In approved childcare facilities, there must always be at least one staff member on site with full certification. Anyone who is the sole person in charge of children such as a childminder must also have this qualification. If there are already staff members with this qualification, you may want to consider joining our Emergency Paediatric First Aid course. This 6 hour course covers the most common childhood illnesses and injuries that may face while looking after infants and how to perform emergency first aid.

This training is aimed at those who look after children 5 years old or younger. That's why it's sometimes referred to as childcare first aid or baby first aid. However, the knowledge and skill you will gain on this course can also be applied to children up to puberty age.

We are proud to now offer a blended paediatric first aid course, which will still provide you with a qualification which enables you to look after early years children professionally. The training covers the most common childhood illnesses and injuries that may face while looking after young children.

Child/infant resuscitation including the use of an AED

Child/infant choking

Treating an unresponsive casualty

Recognition of childhood illness and injuries (e.g. meningitis and croup)
